London Traditions
The Romans commenced building Tower of London over 2,000 years ago so you would expect traditions to abound! They do ! The Ceremony of the Keys every night ensures that the Tower of London is safely locked up, whereupon the Last Post is sounded. These traditions started in the 1300s.
A famous London Social Traditions is Afternoon Tea at the London Ritz. Bookings early for this traditional afternoon tea. There are 5 daily sittings stretching from 11.30 to 19.30.
Lord Mayor's Show is one of the oldest traditions going back to the 1200s. The traditional parade with bands, floats, costumed performers and the State Coach meanders the streets of London.
Changing the Guard is another one of London’s Traditions. Troops have guarded the Royal Palaces since 1660 & this historical spectacle is amongst the most popular of London Traditions.
State Opening of Parliament is part of the medieval traditions marking the start of new parliament. Traditional robes are worn by clergy & peers. The Yeomen of the Guard, royal bodyguards founded in 1485, have searched the cellars of the Houses of Parliament since 1605 since the Catholic Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the King & Parliament.
Trooping the Colour takes place in June & traditionally marks the 'official' birthday of the Queen. Such traditions date back to the early 1700s when the Colours or Battle flags were trooped past soldiers to identify friendly troops.
