Trafalgar Square
The battle of Trafalgar in 1805 was Britain's great naval victory establishing naval supremacy for centuries. The naval genius behind this victory was Admiral Lord Nelson.
It laid the foundation for the rapid expansion of British trade , in particular the East India Company. This burgeoning trade accelerated the development of the British Empire.
The 167 foot statue of Admiral Lord Nelson dominates the square which is a popular venue for political rallies .The Square is one of the most famous places in the world for the celebration of New Year's Eve.
Four majestic bronze lions, each 20 feet long and 11 feet tall guard the base of Nelson’s column . There is an old naval saying that they growl when a maiden passes.
The church of St Martin-in-the-Fields built in 1721 abuts the square & is famous for its lunchtime concerts.
