Lindisfarne Gospels
The manuscript is one of Great Britain's greatest artistic and religious treasures.
A major religious community was established on Holy Island off the coast of Northumbria ( now Northumberland) by the monks of Lindisfarne Priory to saveguard the remains of St Cuthbert, who died in 687.
In the early 700s, monks at the Prior created & used a priceless manuscript now called the Lindisfarne Gospels.
It is a testament to the tenacity of the early Christians scholars who kept the flame of religion alive in the face of the fearsome vikings.
Superbly designed and beautifully crafted it is a miracle that it has survived these 1,300 years !
