The National Portrait Gallery was established in 1856 with Trustees including Earl Stanhope , Macaulay, Benjamin Disraeli and Lord Ellesmere.
The so-called Chandos portrait of Shakespeare was the first picture to enter the Gallery's collection.
The importance of the subject was the only criteria for portrait acceptance.
This criterion is still used by the National Portrait Gallery today.
