Great London Pubs

England is renown for its Bobbies( policemen) & its Great Pubs. London, as you would expect, has more than its fair share of these Great Ale Houses so try to visit them during your stay in London. They bring history alive with their past associations with Highwaymen, Poets, Playwrights, Writers & Politicians.

Prospect of Whitby (Wapping tube) is one of the greatest pubs in London. Situated right on the Thames and dating from  1543, it was a meeting place for smugglers and villains.  A hangman's noose swings over the river, a reminder of those gruesome times. Don’t miss this great pub, one of London’s most famous inns.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese (Blackfriars tube) in Fleet St is another great London pub with a history dating back to the 13th century when it started life as a Carmelite Monastery. The pub's great vaulted cellars used to part of the Monastery. Go down the narrow Wine Office Court alleyway  where you can sample the pub’s great atmosphere which has attracted a host of famous people including Dr. Samuel Johnson , Voltaire, Thackeray and Charles Dickens . Dickens was a frequent visitor as he worked as a Journalist in Fleet St before fame engulfed him. This a must see pub for the London visitor..great  olde world charm!

The John Snow pub(Oxford Circus Tube) in the heart of Soho was named after a great man who saved many lives in Victorian London. Cholera had killed10,000 Londoners  in 1853/54. Snow realised that the fatalities of this great plague were linked to a water pump contaminated by  waste matter. His great discovery was helped by workmen at a local brewery who never caught the disease...they drank gallons of beer instead!

The George Inn (London Bridge Tube) in Borough High St ,London SE1 is London's only surviving galleried coaching inn. Located near London Bridge  on the south bank of the River Thames the George was rebuilt after a great fire destroyed many of Southwark’s Inns in the 17th Century. Shakespeare’s great plays would have staged at the George in times past.
